So here is my second card for SPN Tarot! This is the first time I posted something on DA before my livejournal.
Here are my notes:
Card: Nine of Swords Subject: The Crossroads Demon
Card Meaning: " A man wakes from a nightmare, nine swords on the wall. It can be a good thing to find what you seek, except when it comes to ideas, words or problems. Find too many of them and they will overwhelm you. We all know this card, it is the one where we wake up at night and go over our troubles, problems, worries, thoughts, what we said, what others said. The Querent must be told that while their problems may be real, they're blowing them out of proportion, making them worse, nightmarish. They are spending too many sleepless nights alone and awake with these words, ideas, problems. What they are really seeking is to wake from this bad dream - which they can do by realizing that it is a bad dream - most of it is in their head. "
Artist notes:
Well the description of this card doesn't have much object oriented symbolism other than the swords. The quilt on the Rider-Waite deck has roses and astrological symbols on it.
Roses can symbolize purity and also passion and desire. But here the idea is that it appears that the only way to reach the roses is to cut oneself on the swords and the thorns.
The Crossroads Demon feeds on our fears and insecurities and the Nine of Swords represents the precipice of a choice. The recipient of the card may be suffering from internal pains and mental suffering they have inflicted upon themselves. They can either overcome this pain or fall prey to their fear and lose themselves. Behind the Crossroads Demon is the crossroads themselves, bathed in the light of dusk and waiting for a choice.
The sky is full of stars, touching again on the presence of the astrological signs in the original card.
I hope all my ramblings make sense, I wanted to make sure this design adequately got across the purpose and meaning of the card.
If this wasn't a tarot card design but for a portait, it'd probably look awesome in an ornate frame up on the wall of some sppoky mansion xD. Possessed painting!
Randomness aside . The colours and the detail are brilliant
Oh thank you, I do get what you mean. I love that one particular crossroads demon, the one who sealed Dean's deal. Great actress!
I'd honestly love to do more cards of various different minor characters. Like the girl (molly?) from Roadkill. Loved her! My next cards are going to be Meg 2.0 and War. (WAR!) I'm really excited about them!
Oh good! She was. I also thought that it was such a crucial scene for the series and she wrapped it up quite nicely.
Awesome! I can't wait! I LOVED War and the other horsemen, and although they didn't have much on-screen time, they were a great way to show how these different aspects of life affect humans.
The idea ans the image itself are amazing.
Details, texture, colors... I can't find a words to describe my admiration.

I really like how you used a less popular character like this Crossroad Demon- if you get what I mean.
It's gorgeous!

Thanks so much for all the kind words

Otherworldly is definitely what I was going for.
And dude I love that you noticed the classical elements, when I was adding the drape in I kept thinking about that. <3
